What is the Base Model Pet Door?

This is our supreme quality Pet Door for Sliding Glass Doors. You can use the base model on its own (e.g., in the laundry) or with a Screen Door Adapter fitted (i.e., for security, use of screen door).

How is the Base Model different to the PatioLockTM model?

Unlike the PatioLockTM model, the Base Model does NOT have its own locks to lock the glass door.

So another way to secure the glass door is needed, which tends to involve some degree of screwing, drilling, cutting, handy skills, time, hardware, inconvenience, and so on.

How is Security with the Base Model?

1. ADD the Screen Door Adapter at checkout. The Adapter is needed to transfer the existing lock catch plate for the glass door from the wall onto the adapter. This process will lock the glass door to the pet door but it requires screwing, drilling, handy skills, about 3 hours, and is not quick and easy to install and remove. You will also leave holes in the sliding door frame and pet door, so not a good option for renters or home owners who may move in the future. Note the Screen Door Adapter is also needed if you want to use your fly/security door (if you have one).

2. Rod in track (included): A rod can be cut and placed in the floor track behind the sliding door (cutting required) to wedge the sliding door against the pet door. This simple yet crude option may suit those putting a pet door in the laundry and/or provides a way to wedge the glass door into a Screen Door Adapter without screwing holes (rather than transferring lock mechanisms).

3. A patio bolt: This is a key operated pin that can be fitted to the sliding glass door frame to pin it against the pet door. However, drilling and screwing and handy skills are required to fit this and they cost about $15-20 each from hardwares.

The video below is 9-mins long (sorry!) but explains the difference between the Base Model and the PatioLockTM model in detail:

So, what model should I buy?

Fortunately, the choice is pretty easy.

Most Popular & Convenient Choice: The PatioLockTM system which includes an Adjustable Screen Door Adapter and Lock kit to suit your existing sliding door lock is the best way to go for most. It is cheaper overall; there are no additional handyman costs; it can be reused if/when you move; it has been designed to be installed by people who are NOT handy :); easy to install and remove (e.g., holidays, entertaining) and you won't leave screw holes everywhere. So great for renters and/or people who are not handy but want security!

For the Home Owner AND Handy-skilled: If you are a home owner & handy skilled & have 3 hours spare & are not moving home & are happy to leave holes in the pet door and sliding door frame, then the Base Model with a screen door adapter can work well to transfer locks onto the pet door system. This involves skills, tools, screwing, holes, time etc.

Budget: If you just want a pet door for a laundry and/or are on a tight budget, then you could just buy the Base Model pet door on its own without a Screen Door Adapter. There is a rod in the pet door box that can be cut and put in the floor track to crudely but effectively wedge the glass door against the pet door.
