Check Your Sliding-Door Lock Type

Open your sliding glass door and flick the lever. Either one or two hooks will rotate out from the side of the glass door handle. Note for TWO hook locks, you will need to depress and hold the little chrome pin in on the side of the handle with your finger tip for the hooks to release and rotate. Then just select either the ONE or TWO hook lock at checkout to match your lock. Pictures below for reference.

Check Your Sliding-Door Frame Height

The standard PatioLock height guide is 199–211 cm. Two measurements matter:

Red arrow: From the floor-track base to the LOWEST point of the top track — at least 199 cm.

Blue arrow: From inside bottom to inside top of the glass door frame - max 211cm.

STEP 03

Choose the Correct Flap Size for Your Pet

Reference the flap sizes below relative to the shoulder height of your pet. The Flap height is measured from the ground to the top of the flap — not from the top of the bottom rail. Ideally, we recommend that your dog is shorter than the top of the flap. However, many dogs can duck easily 10cm or more if they are agile and healthy.

STEP 04

Check Wall-Frame Depth for Adjustable Screen Door Adapter Compatability.

Open your Glass Door and Screen Door and face the frame running up the wall that the doors close in to. Then just measure across the entire frame from inside the house across to the outer edge of the screen door channel as per the red arrow in the picture to the right. Do not include lock mechanisms.

The frame measurement for common frames is 10cm or less - this is compatible with the 10cm deep Adjustable Screen Door Adapter- recommended to seal and secure the GLASS door and also allow for screen door use (If you have one).

Note that stacker doors with multiple panels or commercial style frames that are much thicker than common single glazed frames require individual assessment. Email pics and/or refer to the FAQ page item on stacker doors for more info.

What if my sliding doors are taller than 2.1m?+

The standard opening guide is 199-211 cm. For many Medium and Large configurations, height extension kits can increase the working height to approximately 240 cm with one kit and 270 cm with two. These kits require tools and some fitting skill; contact us before ordering for extra-large or unusual openings.

Do I need to buy the Screen Door Adapter if I don't even have a screen door?+

The adjustable adapter is primarily a finishing channel for the sliding glass door. It helps cover the join, improve weather and insect sealing and shield the exposed lock area. Using a flyscreen is an additional benefit, not its only purpose.

Does it matter if my sliding doors open to the left or to the right?+

For standard compatible systems, PatioLock can be configured for doors opening to the left or right. The key compatibility point is the type and position of the existing rotating-hook handle and wall-frame striker.

What if I have two sliding doors that close together in the middle?+

Some centre-closing double-door arrangements can accommodate PatioLock, but the locking and screen arrangements are different from a single sliding door. Send us photographs of the full doorway and both handles so we can assess the appropriate setup before you order.

Will the PatioLock model lock to every type of sliding door lock?+

Look for one or two hooks that rotate outward from the door-handle assembly when you operate the lock. PatioLock's matching striker engages those hooks. A hook hidden within the glass-door frame is a different design and is generally not compatible with the standard kit.

What if I have rare internal style locks?+

Not in the normal screw-free PatioLock configuration. Internal-lock doors may need an alternative fitting method or a different insert. Send a close-up of the handle and frame before buying so we can discuss what is practical.

What is the difference between the PatioLockTM model & and all other inserts?+

A plain insert may provide pet access but still leave you needing separate work to secure the glass door. PatioLock is designed to connect directly to the existing door-handle lock and the wall-frame fitting on compatible doors, without shifting those original locks.

Should I buy the PatioLockTM Model or the Base Model?+

A Base Model can suit certain installations where drilling and fixing hardware are acceptable, but the fitting is more involved than PatioLock. The PatioLock system is the simpler choice where compatible existing locks allow screw-free glass-door locking. Ask us about older-model availability before ordering.

How are locks transferred on the Base Model with a Screen Door Adapter?+

Some older approaches remove a striker or locking fitting from its original position and reattach it to brackets or an adapter, which can involve drilling, screws and repainting. PatioLock avoids this step for the original glass door when the rotating-hook system is compatible.

Will the pet door fit in the screen door track?+

The pet-door panel normally belongs in the glass-door track, not the narrow screen-door track. An Adjustable Screen Door Adapter provides a separate closing channel for a compatible flyscreen.

Will common external locks transfer on to the Screen Door Adapter?+

Often, a compatible security-screen striker can be moved to the adapter so the screen can lock. Unlike the glass-door connection, this optional screen-door work needs screws and basic tools. Check your screen lock design first.

What if my doors are timber?+

Timber doors vary widely in frame thickness and handle offset. The standard adjustable adapter is generally designed around aluminium glass-door systems and may not accommodate a timber frame. Please send photographs before ordering.

Can the pet door be installed into the fixed panel behind the glass door?+

The normal PatioLock arrangement uses the working sliding glass door and its existing wall-frame lock point. Installation beside a fixed panel is a different setup and may affect sealing and locking. Please ask us to check a photograph and dimensions first.

What if I have more than one sliding glass panel (stacker doors)?+

Stacker doors are not all constructed alike. Track layout, frame thickness and where the locking panel sits determine compatibility. Send us photos of the open and closed doors as well as the handle.

What if I have double-glazed sliding doors?+

Double glazing alone does not decide whether PatioLock fits. Frame profile, track dimensions, lock position and overall doorway measurements are more important. Some thick commercial-style frames require special assessment.

What if my glass door is on the outside track and my screen door is on the inside track?+

The standard system assumes the glass door is on the inner track and the screen, if fitted, is on the outer track. A reversed arrangement can change how the adapter and locking hardware meet, so it needs a photo check before ordering.

Will there be any gaps once the pet door is installed without an adapter?+

Without the optional Adjustable Screen Door Adapter, a visible join may remain between the panel and your sliding door. The adapter supplies a closing channel intended to improve the seal, appearance and protection around that join.

What is the overall width of the pet doors?+

Panel width varies with product size and model configuration. Measure the space available in your sliding-door opening and contact us if you need the exact overall width for a particular flap size before purchasing.

What if I want a custom colour?+

As noted, the adapter primarily seals and secures the GLASS door, so it is strongly recommended you buy the adapter regardless of whether you have/use the screen door. Other benefits include:

Original order checklist: rotating hooks and unusual locks+

I want to buy myself a PatioLock model- what do I have to check before ordering?

Run through the order checklist below and then select your options at the top of this page.

Order Checklist Steps:

Step 1: Do you have a common ONE or TWO rotating hook lock?

Open your sliding door and flick the lever on your door handle. Notice if ONE or TWO hooks ROTATE out from the side of the door handle.

Reference your lock against those in the pictures below. Green is good!

Tip: you may have to push and hold a little pin in with your finger for two hook locks to release their hooks.

Step 1.1: What if my lock does NOT match the above one/two rotating hooks?

Some rare sliding door handles do not have rotating hooks, but rather the whole handle slides up and down. This type of lock even though it has a single hook, can work with the TWO hook lockset PatioLock model with some modification, so you would order the TWO hook lock for this style lock.

However, if you doors have INTERNAL style locks like those in the pics below with the red X through them, then the PatioLock model will NOT work. Take a close look and NOTICE the lock mechanisms are INSIDE the aluminium frame, they are NOT located in the handle frame like the pics with the green tics above.

If your door has internal locks, then refer to the FAQ page item on internal locks and check if the base model with a screen door adapter will work.

Original measurements: wall depth, height and extension kits+

Step 2: Check the wall frame is 10cm or LESS, from left to right.

Measure across the frame externally, from inside the house to the outside edge of the screen door track as per the picture below. Do NOT include the catch plate/lock mechanism mounted on the wall.

This is ideally 10cm or less for the adapter to work well.

Step 3. Check the 199-211cm height range of your sliding door frame as per vid or picture below.

If your doors are taller than 2.1m, then extension kits are available to extend the door. One kit gets you to 2.4m. Two kits to 2.7m.

It is important to check a. & b. below:

a. Inside bottom of glass door floor track to the LOWEST point of the top track needs to be 199cm or more (re red arrow below).

b. The inside bottom to inside top needs to be 211cm or less re blue arrow.

Step 6: Adding the Adjustable Screen Door adapter to the cart:

The name of the Screen Door Adapter is rather misleading as its primary function is to seal and secure the glass door, just like the channel in the wall frame that the glass door closes in to. We strongly recommend getting the adapter even if you don't have/use your screen.

If you do have a screen door, then you will get the added benefit of being able to use the screen door to let air in/out of the house to aid heating/cooling without letting all the insects in.

It is much cheaper ($91 vs over $200) to order the adapter when you order your PatioLock model, so add the adapter to the cart with the drop down box at the top of this page (after pet door colour and flap size) if you want to maximise security and sealing and screen use.

Step 7: Shipping costs:

Free or flat-rate shipping is no longer possible Australia-wide because the pet doors are over 1.8m long, which classes them as over-size freight that generates manual handling surcharges in addition to domestic delivery surcharges, fuel levies and the actual courier fee.

Many of the large couriers have stopped doing over-size freight so we use different couriers depending on your exact location within Australia.

We are able to have a few zones per se in the check out step to try and streamline some of the courier pricing but if you live in rural towns then please select the $1 freight option and we will invoice you the courier price once we get the quote back. If you prefer you can email what you want and the address and we can quote before putting the order through. We do not put any mark up on freight so the price will be the same whether you order before or after.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use an accurate freight calculator at checkout as we can't just use one company that could provide prices. The zone model is the best system we can come up with thus far to try and span some of the more populated regions.

Can I lock the flap?

Yes, you can see the steel powder coated lock panel and lock system in the picture below.

Did you know the PatioLock model offers more Security than the old dated method of transferring locks?

Without boring you with engineering details, the PatioLock model uses the existing locks and the way your locks are mounted on the frame in their original position is typically stronger compared to the direction of the screws and pull-out force required when using brackets when locks are transferred.

What if I move house, can I re-use the PatioLock model?

Yes, you can because the PatioLock model is fully adjustable and universal which means you can keep reusing it if/when you move homes and because no screwing is involved it is perfect for renters and home owners because you won't be leaving screw holes everywhere!

Again, please note, the Screen Door Adapter name is somewhat misleading, its main function is to seal and secure the GLASS door, so we strongly recommend getting the adapter even if you do not use/have a screen door.

Our patented adapter is also the only adjustable adapter on the market, which means you can keep re-using this as well if/when you move homes.

What happens if my current house has a one hook lock and I move to a house that requires a two hook lock, or vice versa?

The lock kits can be ordered separately to accommodate moving homes. However, 80% of houses have a single hook lock, so if you have a single, you have a high probability of being able to keep using that at multiple properties.
